The City Tower and the bell tower of St. George’s Church is a striking element of Ptuj’s skyline, reaching an impressive height of 54 meters with its onion-shaped roof. In the form we largely recognize today, it was built in 1603 on the foundations of an older Gothic tower dating back to the 10th century. Initially, its function was defensive and observational, but as the need for timekeeping grew, the city tower gained the additional function of a bell tower with its mechanical clock and several bells.

Over the centuries, the city of Ptuj endured numerous fires and wars, during which the old bells melted, the original clock was destroyed, and the tower’s roof was damaged. Despite these challenges, the city tower has endured and continues to reign over the streets of Ptuj’s historic center.
